The Other End
My name is Golbon Moltaji, I am an Iranian born visual artist based in Ottawa, Canada.
From the very young age of two, drawing is been my natural way of connecting with others; through arts I defy social and political restrictions of day to day. Influenced by Tehran's dynamic city vibes, I am an advocate of resistance urban art and massive installations in public places. In my ideal world, I will be leading "taking back the space" projects in dense and vibrant city centers.
I obtained my first drawing and painting diploma from Tehran Musical School in 1992 before I went to primary school. One of my pieces on educational access was published in the most recognized comic weekly of Iran in 1997 (Gol Agha, children's edition). I have received a number of participant appreciation awards from Iran’s national broadcasting agency (IRIB) and from the office of the president (former president Khatami) for my pieces on environmental issues in 1998 and 1999 respectively.
I moved to Canada in 2009 and in obtained a Comic Book Writing certificate from the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto in 2012. Since moving to Ottawa in 2013 I published a series of comics for Canadian Bureau of International Education and had 5 solo and group exhibitions. My pieces have been adopted by Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) for various booklets and zines and I freelance for The Leveller both as a writer and cartoonist. I began DJ-ing from December 2015. Since then the controller, sound frequencies and tempos have become my most enjoyable companion. I initiated and DJ/host for Make Me Bad Mondays, a biweekly music session at UOttawa's Cafe Nostalgica (since January 2017) and play at occasional gigs around town.
My objective for majority of my artistic presentations is to provide a non-conforming, provocative and feminine outlook to social phenomenon that often go unspoken, or are predominated by market-oriented, opaque and contradictory perspectives.
